What are Dipping Inks ?
Published on 18-12-2024The formulation of contrast inks allows advanced painters to mark volumes, as well as easily make glazes, quickly bringing out the details of your figure, making it a very useful tool for a professional painter.
What is the best primer for Dipping inks?
Any matte white primer or other light-colored primer is suitable for this function.
How to use Dipping contrast paints with an airbrush.
They have the perfect dilution for airbrush use.
How to paint Warhammer miniatures faster?
The first thing to change and which will allow you to paint faster is to use bigger brushes. Forget #0 brushes or smaller ones, we’ll try not to use them bbecause these are used for very small details. Use brushes of size 1 or larger, but size 2 is recommended for wargaming miniatures or larger models.although we recommend size 2, especially when talking about miniatures for wargaming, or even a little larger.
Limit your color palette so you don’t have to keep looking and thinking about which color to use at any given moment. Normally, 4 to 5 should be enough, depending on the shape and silhouette. If you’re unsure about which color to use, you can always leave it black.
Use quick painting techniques by employing zenithal or snap chop primers, which are not the same but are very similar in the end.
Take advantage of the color saturation of contrast Dipping inks and paint each area of your miniature without staining the outside of that particular area. Just apply the colors by zones.
Paint many figures in series, optimizing the colors and tasks that repeat from one figure to the next. This way, the colors will have time to dry properly.
Difference between Zenithal and Slapchop (Grisaille)
The zenithal technique consists of simulating the color of the sun at noon, when the sun is at its zenith. After applying a black primer coat, you simply apply a second layer of white primer coat from above in one direction to create shadows. This can only be done with an airbrush or spray primer.
This technique allows for almost perfect gradients and good color transitions, with very realistic highlights. After this initial technique, you can start coloring all areas of the miniature with GSW speed paint: Dipping inks.
The quick grisaille (Slapchop) painting method for miniatures involves applying a black primer layer, then using a strong dry brush with a gray or almost white color, leaving darker areas in the deep parts of the miniature. Depending on the contrasts desired, it may also be useful to use a lighter dry-brushing paint. Finally, simply apply Dipping inks to color each area.
The first zenithal technique is much cleaner, but you will need an airbrush or spray, and in many cases, you might not get the desired results if you don’t apply certain lighting. This technique requires a bit more control and skill to be able to fix any zenithal lighting errors.
The world’s best painters use this technique because they can fundamentally highlight and correct any interpretation of colors, shadows, and lighting, so their finishes are likely to be better than those using less complex techniques.
The grisaille technique, on the other hand, has other advantages, such as being possible to apply with a brush, always using a large number of brushes, and allowing for quick lighting and shading, although not as realistic as the zenithal technique, and in most cases, it will be perfectly acceptable for painting any miniature for a board game or wargame with ease. This grisaille (or snap chop) technique will be more suitable for beginners.
What are Dipping inks or contrast paints for?
Contrast inks are designed to be applied on light primers, creating shadows and highlights in a single pass. They allow you to layer them to reinforce or saturate the colors.
Is a Dipping ink the same as a wash ink?
Wash paints are less pigmented inks with a proportion of black color primarily used to shade or contrast miniatures.
Dipping inks fall somewhere between a normal paint and a wash in terms of consistency and coverage.
Is a Dipping ink the same as an intensity ink?
Intensity inks are highly pigmented paints, typically pure, used to increase the intensity of another color. They are usually pure primary colors, unmixed, with a similar formulation that allows them to be used like dipping paints.
Dipping Inks are generally secondary or tertiary colors, which, thanks to their unique medium, allow for various color shades in a single application.
Is it possible to mix contrast paint with regular paint?
For the main function, it is not advisable to mix these paints as they would lose some of their properties and behave strangely. There are 36 colors in the range, and I’m sure one of them has the color you’re looking for.
However, you can mix dipping inks with other colors, such as white, to achieve secondary highlights and create stronger illuminations.
