Modelism, a passion for sharing
Lacquer paint sits between solvent-based acrylic paint and enamel paint in terms of its composition and application. Known for its fine to very fine grain, lacquer paint is easy to apply with an airbrush due to its rapid drying combined with excellent tension, offering a beautifully smooth airbrush finish. They are completely miscible with each other.
When using lacquer paint, there are several important considerations to keep in mind:
- Lacquer paints generally have a noticeable odor. However, certain brands, such as AK paints, have a more discreet, light ether odor, making them more tolerable for prolonged use.
- The diluent in lacquer paint evaporates quickly, which can affect the application process.
- Lacquer paint can be very difficult to apply with a brush on flat areas unless a suitable retarding medium, such as Tamiya Acrylic Retarder, is added. The retarder should be used at a maximum of 10% to ensure optimal results.
To achieve the best results with lacquer paint, follow these recommendations:
- Use a cleaner: It is advisable to use a specialized cleaner for deep cleaning of tools and brushes after using lacquer paint.
- Primer application: Applying a primer before painting helps improve paint adhesion, resulting in a more durable finish.
Lacquered paints are not compatible with Acrylic paints.
